SEOUL, July 5 (Korea Bizwire) — More than one third of adults living in the city of Seoul haven’t engaged in sexual intercourse in the last 12 months, a recent survey showed.
Yum Yoo-sik, a sociology professor at Yonsei University, together with infectious disease professor Choi Jun-yong conducted a survey of 2,182 men and women over the age of 19 living in Seoul, which showed that 36 percent haven’t had sex in the last 12 months.
Sorted by gender, 43 percent of females and 29 percent of males have had no sexual intercourse in the last year.
Compared to a survey conducted by U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. in 2000 in which 11 percent had been sexless in the previous 12 months, the rate has tripled over the past 21 years.
Among those who claimed to be sexless in the last 12 months, 1 in 4 female respondents (24 percent) were sexless because they were ‘not interested,’ while 15 percent of male respondents said they couldn’t find a partner.
Another 15 percent of sexless respondents said their choice was based on voluntary reasons, while 21 percent were involuntary, driven mainly by financial or health reasons.
