SEOUL, Dec. 27 (Korea Bizwire)The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted a nationwide online survey with the participation of 1,000 people over 19 years of age, inquiring about their willingness to donate organs and tissue.

The results indicated that 7 out of 10 participants were willing to be donors. While most of the participants knew about organ donation, only 45.7 percent knew about donating tissue.

In South Korea, there are more than 30,000 patients currently waiting to receive organ transplants. However, domestic organ donations are low compared to other advanced countries such as Spain, the U.S. and Italy.

The reasons for not donating organs included “no to body damage”, “simply terrified”, “lack of information”, and “no real reason”.

Fortunately, the number of organ donors is increasing every year as perspectives change. But more organ donation is needed considering only 2.6 percent of the population has registered as donors.

Information can be found and registration completed online, via fax or in person.
