Seoul, S. Korea, July 06 (Korea Biz Wire) The 2013 Tomato Festival, hosted by the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation and the Korea Tomato Association and sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Rural Affairs, was held on July 4 at the Yangjae (Seoul) location of NACF Hanaro Club. The festival featured a variety of events and performances including tomato pool fighting, new tomato variety exhibition, tomato dish tasting, tomato cooking class, and celebrity-filled stage event.
Choi Gye-jo, president of the Korea Tomato Association, said, “The 2013 Tomato Festival was prepared to promote tomatoes and their medicinal effects. We hope the event was helpful for our promotion of tomatoes as a healthful vegetable.”
Tomato is one of the top-ten healthy foods selected by the U.S. Time magazine. It is an excellent source of lycopene, a phytochemical believed to be the most powerful antioxidant found in food and thought to play a role in preventing cancer and heart disease especially when cooked or dried.
