SEOUL, Sept. 6 (Korea Bizwire)Four South Korean companies — LG Chem Ltd., Samsung C&T Corp., Namhae Chemical Corp. and Doosan Enerbility Co. — on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding to promote cooperation in the production and usage of ammonia-based clean hydrogen.

Under terms of the MOU, LG Chem plans to introduce clean hydrogen at its Yeosu plant in South Jeolla Province and use it as a fuel for its naphtha cracking center (NCC) that cracks naphtha at high temperatures and produces basic fractions such as ethylene.

When combusted, clean hydrogen generates no carbon dioxide. Accordingly, if it is used as a petrochemical fuel, it can greatly reduce carbon emissions compared to existing methods.

Namhae Chemical will be responsible for providing supply infrastructure, including ammonia storage tanks for the transportation, conversion and usage of ammonia.

Doosan Enerbility will be in charge of securing the technology to produce clean hydrogen by cracking ammonia.

Based on its know-how in energy resource trading and renewable energy, Samsung C&T will play the role of developing an overall business model covering the introduction and usage of clean hydrogen for the domestic market.
