SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Korea Bizwire) — Gujwa-eup Office in Jeju is discarding 4,000 tons of carrots farmed at 100 local farms, totaling 100 ha, in order to stabilize souring carrot prices resulting from overproduction.

The carrot farmers will be financially supported for discarding their harvests, and are expected to be compensated 1 million won (US$ 920) per 10 acres of carrot farmland. The carrot cull is a 1 billion won (US$ 0.9 million) project that will be carried out until January 31 by the office and the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation’s Gujwa-eup branch.

The office is also planning to revive local carrot farms by expanding the carrot supply for processed goods and stored goods. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs decided on January 5 to isolate 11,500 tons of carrots from the market during the months of January and February to stabilize supply and demand.
