5G Network Upgrade Offers Speed Boost to Public Bus Wi-Fi

SEOUL, July 11 (Korea Bizwire)The government is introducing a 5G network to replace LTE-based public Wi-Fi on public buses to expand access to the internet and help the public save on their mobile phone bills.

The Ministry of Science and ICT installed 5G networking equipment on the first batch of 4,200 public buses that provide access to public Wi-Fi on July 1. The remaining 25,000 buses will also have 5G networking devices installed.

With the introduction of the 5G network, internet speed will increase from under 100 megabits per second (Mbps) to between 300 and 400 Mbps.

¹ö½º¿¡¼­ ¹«·á Wi-Fi »ç¿ë

The government selected telecom operator LG Uplus Corp. to lead plans for setting up additional public Wi-Fi spots at some 10,000 locations across the country including libraries, traditional markets and bus stops.

This will increase the overall number of public Wi-Fi spots from 72,000 to 82,000 locations.
