SEOUL, Jul. 6 (Korea Bizwire) — A new team of undercover inspectors was launched yesterday, tasked with making unannounced rounds at construction sites to prevent accidents.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government revealed yesterday that Mayor Park Won-soon had handed out individual badges to 20 newly commissioned undercover safety inspectors.
The team, composed of experts in the fields of disaster prevention and civil engineering, will be checking to see if workers are well prepared with proper safety equipment, if the proprietor has provided personal protective equipment to workers, and if safety footholds were properly installed, in addition to other safety measures.
The team will be paying particular attention to workers who are not equipped with safety helmets, boots and other individual protective wear.
The crackdown will focus mostly on construction sites for the rest of the year. Starting next year, however, the team’s agenda will be expanded to include a wider array of safety checks, such as blocked emergency exits at public facilities.
Go Seung-hyo, the director of facility safety at the Seoul government office, said that the level of punishment for those who go against safety laws will be strengthened.
“The aim of the crackdown is to ensure that workers become more sensitive and aware of safety measures at construction sites,” said the city official.
