SEOUL, Oct. 20 (Korea Bizwire) — To be well prepared for the commercialization of Level 4 autonomous driving technology, a next-generation Cooperative Intelligent Transport System (C-ITS) will be established throughout major roads in South Korea on a gradual basis starting from this year.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Tuesday that the basic plan for ‘Intelligent Transport System (2021-2030)’ was confirmed after passing the review of the Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday.
Under this plan, the government plans to establish C-ITS communication infrastructure that would enable the vehicles operating on major roads throughout the country to exchange traffic information with other vehicles or facilities in real time.
To ensure reliable information exchange between vehicles, infrastructure and centers, a vehicle-to-everything (V2X) security certification system will also be established. This system will allow V2X information exchange only for certified vehicles and infrastructure.
To promote the use of urban air mobility (UAM), the government will set up standards on the structure and installation of boarding facilities, while developing a 3D urban map.
Moreover, the government will expand the coverage of a smart CCTV monitoring system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect unexpected situations such as reverse driving to main roads, while establishing a road state management system that sends drivers alerts about dangerous road conditions by identifying hazards such as ice and rock falls.
