SEOUL, Dec. 1 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korean shipyard HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co. said Friday it has clinched a US$432.4 million order to build four very large ammonia carriers for a European shipper.
Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co., one of HD Korea Shipbuilding’s three shipbuilding units, will construct the vessels at its shipyard in the southwestern port of Yeongam, the company said in a regulatory filing.
The ammonia carriers will be delivered to the undisclosed shipping company in stages by the second half of 2027.
HD Korea Shipbuilding said global demand for ammonia carriers has been rising in recent years amid growing awareness of eco-friendly fuels that do not emit carbon dioxide.
The shipbuilder said it has obtained orders to build 23 ammonia and liquefied petroleum gas carriers this year, or 61 percent of the total global orders for 38 such ships.
So far this year, HD Korea Shipbuilding has bagged orders to build 154 vessels and a floating production unit, or 138.7 percent of its yearly target of $15.74 billion.
HD Korea Shipbuilding, a subholding company of shipbuilding, oil refining and machinery conglomerate HD Hyundai, has three domestic units under its wing — HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries.
