SEOUL, May 24 (Korea Bizwire) – Hyundai Motor Group has come up with a global application platform for cars. Customers who buy Hyundai or Kia cars in near future will be able to download and use apps for cars on the go.

On May 22, according to Hyundai Motor Group, its joint R&D center has recently completed the development of a global app platform for cars. The global app platform is an operating system for cars which is equivalent to Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS.

Hyundai and Kia plan to get the app platform installed in the companies’ new cars. A Hyundai Motor Group official said, “The joint development of in-car app platform by Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors has been completed and implemented in some LF Sonatas for test.”

Thanks to the development of the integrated platform, development of apps for the new platform is expected to follow. The companies recruited Hwang Seung-ho, the former vice president at Samsung Electronics, as director of IT Service Department for Cars (vice president).

The IT Service Department for Cars is the division in charge of smart car development through telematics, which is the service enabling the access to information including the web, e-mails and music files by telecommunication means while moving.

An IT industry insider said, “Since the operating system has already been made based on wireless network, software companies are likely to follow up by developing customized apps for cars.” Hyundai Motor Group is also determined to keep up with app development. A Hyundai Motor official said, “We are going to identify the needs of our customers to expedite the development of customized apps for cars.”

Although the new app platform does not feature interlocking function yet, Hyundai Car Group has mentioned that it will be “on the way” upon demands.
