SEOUL, Dec 17 (Korea Bizwire)Actor Jung Woo-sung says he’s never thought of becoming a producer — though that’s exactly the role he played, in addition to the male lead, for the upcoming indie film “Don’t Forget Me.”

“I wanted to protect the director’s original ideas,” he told reporters at a theater in southern Seoul. It’s his first time wearing the producer’s hat.

In “Don’t Forget Me,” Seokwon (Jung) loses his memories from the past 10 years after getting in a car accident. He falls in love with Jinyeong (Kim Ha-neul) whom he meets at a hospital, and Jinyeong tries to prevent him from remembering the past for an unknown reason, which slowly unravels as the movie progresses.’

“Don’t Forget Me” is the longer version of the 2010 short film, “Remember You,” by the same director, Lee Yoon-jung. The story is based on a novella Lee had written in high school, and Lee said she wanted the shorter version to act as a “pilot” to introduce the work and herself as a director.

Because Jung appeared in a movie whose scenario Lee had written, “The Good, The Bad, The Weird,” in 2008, she asked him to be the leading man, to which Jung agreed without hesitation, Lee said.

But Jung said many producers he introduced to Lee had issue with the “core of the scenario” — “Don’t Forget Me” is sort of a mystery drama in which the secret behind the relationship between Seokwon and Jinyeong becomes exposed as Seokwon begins to recall his memories.

“A lot of experienced producers were intimidated by that,” Jung said. “They tried to change her work, so I started wondering how I could help, and that’s how I got to produce it.”

Jung said had the other producers worked on the movie, the plot would have turned a lot plainer and become chronological.

“The mystery is very subtle and not exaggerated. I’m not sure if the audience would catch on it,” he said.

Meanwhile, “Don’t Forget Me” is also actress Kim Ha-neul’s return to the silver screen after five years.

“It’s fun to see how the missing pieces come together like in a puzzle,” she said of the movie. “I was so touched by the scenario it took some time to sink in.”

“Don’t Forget Me” opens in South Korean theaters on Jan. 7, 2016.’
