SEOUL, Apr. 24 (Korea Bizwire) — Starbucks coffee grounds are composted and sprayed on farmland, and agricultural products grown as food for the compost will be reborn as Starbucks products.
Starbucks Coffee Korea Co. announced on Tuesday that it had signed a mutually beneficial agreement with the city of Pyeongtaek on Monday, along with the Korea Zero Waste Movement Network and MIDM Agricultural Union Corp. based in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province.
Under the agreement, Starbucks will donate eco-friendly coffee waste to farms in Pyeongtaek and start developing and selling various products using agricultural produce in the area.
Starbucks will also actively participate in volunteer activities such as donating 13,500 units of coffee waste compost to farms in Pyeongtaek and helping farm workers.
To date, Starbucks has been developing a variety of products such as Real Fruits Apples by utilizing farm products from Pyeongtaek. It recently released four types of rice bread made from rice in Pyeongtaek.
An official from Starbucks reported that it is the first time that the company has reached a mutually beneficial agreement with a local government directly.
Starbucks plans to create new added value for farmers and protect the environment by introducing products that utilize local agricultural produce.
