DAEJEON, May 10 (Korea Bizwire)A new artificial intelligence (AI) system has been developed to monitor the abnormal behaviors of subway passengers in the central city of Daejeon.

The Daejeon Metropolitan City Government and the Daejeon Express Transit Corp. jointly announced that the ‘AI Edge System for Urban Railroads’ was selected as a state-backed government project by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

This system uses AI-based CCTV cameras that monitor the abnormal behaviors of subway passengers, including violence, fainting and failure to wear a mask, on a real-time basis.

If abnormal activities are detected, the system will alert a control tower and the train driver to enable them to make swift and timely responses.

The subway operator plans to establish this system for a four-car subway train on a trial basis and to demonstrate the system for commercialization.

In February, an ‘AI Station Safety System’ that sends real-time alarms when subway passengers have safety problems was established in Daejeon subway stations.

By using CCTV cameras installed at subway stations, the system sends an alert if it detects 13 different types of abnormal activities, thereby enabling subway station workers to respond rapidly.
