SEOUL, June 21 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea’s military is developing a training system capable of simulating air-to-air combat against artificial intelligence (AI) enemy aircraft.

The Air Force said Tuesday it has signed a contract with Korea Aerospace Industries Co. (KAI), the country’s sole aircraft manufacturer, for the development of an AI-based simulated aircraft training system on Tuesday.

In the current training simulator, enemy aircraft are controlled using preset data.

The AI-based simulated flight training system will allow AI enemy aircraft to maneuver freely and engage in combat.

The Air Force and KAI will invest 35.6 billion won (US$27.5 million) to establish the system at the 29th Tactical Fighter Weapons Group by the end of 2025.

This new initiative comes after the Air Force recognized the importance of training pilots to adapt to an ever-changing battlefield, particularly with the introduction of cutting-edge fighters like the F-35A and KF-21 Boramae.
