ANYANG, South Korea, April 23 (Korea Bizwire) – In a proactive move to enhance public safety, the city of Anyang in Gyeonggi Province announced on April 23, 2025, that it will install AI-powered gender recognition CCTV systems at 28 additional women’s public restrooms this year.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to deter and respond swiftly to sexual crimes targeting women in public facilities.

These AI surveillance systems, positioned at restroom entrances, analyze facial features to determine the gender of individuals attempting to enter. If the system identifies a male attempting to access a women’s restroom, it immediately triggers an alert to the city’s Smart City Integrated Control Center. The system displays the location and name of the facility in real time, enabling rapid assessment and response.

The AI CCTVs are integrated with existing safety infrastructure, including illegal camera detection systems and emergency call buttons, allowing authorities to notify police immediately if suspicious activity is detected.

The city began deploying the technology in late 2024, with 45 out of 85 public restrooms in parks and riverside areas now equipped with the system. The expansion reflects growing public concern following recent reports of sexual assaults in women’s restrooms in other cities.

“Incidents of restroom-related sexual crimes continue to generate fear among citizens,” a city official said. “We are committed to expanding smart safety technologies across all public restrooms to ensure they are secure spaces for everyone.”
