SEOUL, Jan. 23 (Korea Bizwire)About 1,000 North Korean soldiers are believed to have been killed while fighting Ukrainian forces in Russia’s western front-line region of Kursk, a news report said Thursday.

Out of the estimated 11,000 North Korean troops deployed in support of Russia’s war against Ukraine, 4,000 have been killed, wounded, missing or captured, BBC reported, citing unnamed Western officials.

Of the total North Korean casualties, around 1,000 are believed to have been killed by mid-January, it said.

The report comes just months after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed his country’s first combat engagement with North Korean troops in November.

The report said the losses, if confirmed, are unsustainable for North Korea and point to an “extraordinarily high cost” to the country’s leader Kim Jong-un.

Last week, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) told lawmakers here that at least 300 North Korean troops have been killed, while some 2,700 have been wounded.

The NIS attributed the large number of casualties to the North Korean troops’ lack of understanding of modern warfare.
