SEOUL, April 19 (Korea Bizwire) — Efforts are being made to improve accessibility for disabled individuals in the arts industry.
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea provides various accessibility services, including voice guides, sign language commentary, and easy-to-follow instructions, to ensure that individuals with disabilities have better access to the museum.
For example, MMCA Seoul’s “Lee Kun-hee Collection: Lee Jung-seop” employs curating robots to provide sign language translations for visitors with hearing disabilities.
By pushing a button on the robot’s touch screen, visitors can access commentaries for various art pieces in sign language.
Starting in May with the “Game Society” exhibition in Seoul, MMCA plans to provide interface devices to visitors with disabilities, ensuring accessibility to various gaming devices and content.
Last year, the Seoul Museum of Art introduced easy-to-understand language and design in the commentary for art pieces to enhance the accessibility of visitors with developmental disabilities.
Starting in April, the museum will provide sign language commentary every Wednesday night during the final week of the month.
In August of last year, Leeum Museum of Art created sign language videos for the most representative art pieces in the permanent exhibition hall, making them accessible via QR code.
Additionally, last December, the museum invited around 100 people with hearing disabilities from the Seoul Association of the Deaf and sign language translators for an exhibition tour.
The event was accompanied not only by sign language translation but also by text translation by stenographers.
