SEOUL, Korea, Nov 02 (Korea Bizwire) – Asiana Airlines set out to install 30 solar-powered streetlights in Myanmar as part of its global corporate social responsibility activities. The airliner said on October 31 that it held on the same day a signing ceremony for environmentally friendly streetlights at the nation’s former capital Yangon, with more than 100 dignitaries, including chief-minister of the Yangon region MyintSwe, minister of social affairs MyintThein, Korea International Cooperation Agency Myanmar office head Nam Kwon-hyung, and Korea Trade Promotion Corp. Myanmar office chief Park Cheol-ho, as well as Asiana Air president Yoon Young-du, in attendance at the Shwedagon Pagoda in downtown Yangon.
President Yoon of Asiana Airlines said, “As the solar-powered streetlamps keep the golden pagoda bright at night, everyone visiting this beautiful place will realize the intimate relationship between Myanmar and Korea.”
One solar-powered streetlamp can save up to 230 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions a year comparing to lighting an incandescent lightbulb. The company has donated solar-powered lighting devices to developing countries in which it has destinations, including 50 streetlights near Angkor Wat, Cambodia, and 40 in Da Nang, Vietnam. Next year, it will install 25 streetlamps in Indonesia’s Jakarta.
