SEOUL, Feb. 14 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s display industry is facing strong headwinds due to the global economic slump, but automotive organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, for which demand is surging, are emerging as a silver lining.
This year’s global shipments of automotive displays are expected to exceed 200 million units, according to the latest report from market researcher Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC).
At present, the automotive OLED display market is dominated by Samsung Display Co. and LG Display Co., the country’s two largest display makers.
LG Display is leading the market by supplying displays to major car brands such as Mercedes-Benz and Cadillac.
The company plans to widen its lead over its competitors by expanding order receipts for automotive plastic OLED (P-OLED) panels.
Samsung Display is also clinching major automotive OLED orders from carmakers such as Audi and BMW.
It showcased its New Digital Cockpit, a digitalized car control space targeting the self-driving vehicle market at CES 2023 held early this year in Las Vegas.
