INCHEON, Jul. 8 (Korea Bizwire)Islands off South Korea’s west coast have been designated as National Geoparks of Korea.

They include the 51-square-kilometer Baengnyeong Island, 13-square-kilometer Daecheong Island, and 3-square-kilometer Socheong Island.

There are 10 unique geological sites in the parks, including Baengyeong’s Dumujin, Socheong’s Bunbawi Rock, and Daecheong’s Nongyeo Beach.

The islands have extensive ranges of sedimentary rocks that go 1 billion years back to the Neoproterozoic era.

Geologists also found stromatolites, which are layered mounds, columns, and sheet-like sedimentary rocks that keep some of the oldest living species ever to have inhabited the Korean peninsula.
