SEOUL, Jan. 25 (Korea Bizwire) — Big data technology was used to find blind spots in the welfare system in the city of Anseong, Gyeonggi Province.
The National Information Resources Service (NIRS) created a ‘welfare map’ of Anseong City using four years of the city’s welfare payment logs, a list of subsidies provided to private welfare agencies as well as distressed households, to better understand Anseong’s welfare system.
The map also provides a list of various support offered by welfare agencies in Anseong, a list of those who need support, and the distance between the welfare agencies and the residence of the recipients.
The map revealed that the majority of the services provided by welfare agencies in Anseong tended to concentrate on those living within a 15-minute distance from their location.
The NIRS concluded that adding three more welfare institutions in areas with concentrated demand as well as setting up four more transportation channels in delicate traffic zones would boost welfare accessibility by 25 percent.
The service also developed an analysis model that can estimate the possibility of distressed households, which qualify for temporary support, falling down the social ladder to require full-time support, with 83.3 percent accuracy.
The NIRS and Anseong plan to use this model to prevent distressed families from falling into worse situations and provide them with welfare benefits that can help them get back on their feet.
