Big Increase in News Consumption via Mobile Internet

SEOUL, Jan. 31 (Korea Bizwire) – Koreans’ consumption rate of news coverage through public TV networks in 2014 dropped to 84.7 percent from 93.8 percent in 2013, according to a survey of 5,061 Koreans over 19 about Korea’s media consumption in 2014 that was published by the Korea Press Foundation on January 30.

The rate of watching public TV for news coverage decreased among Koreans of all age, but was particularly pronounced among Koreans in their twenties. 

The consumption rate of news coverage through paper-based media decreased from 33.8 percent in 2013 to 30.7 percent in 2014. However, the rate increased from 16.4 percent in 2013 to 17.6 percent among Koreans in their twenties. The consumption rate of news coverage through radio also decreased, among Koreans of all age, from 18.3 percent in 2013 to 14.3 percent in 2014. 

The most notable change over the last three years came from the rate of consumption via mobile internet access. The rate increased threefold from 19.5 percent in 2011 to 59.6 percent in 2014. The news consumption rate through fixed internet access dropped slightly from 50.7 percent in 2013 to 47.7 percent in 2014. 

The news consumption rate through SNS increased from 19.9 percent in 2013 to 20.7 percent in 2014, while the consumption rate through internet portals increased from 65.3 percent to 65.9 percent. 

The consumption rate of TV networks also decreased from 96.8 percent in 2013 to 94.4 percent in 2014, while the consumption rate of newspapers dropped from 33.8 percent to 30.7 percent. The consumption rate of radio broadcasts decreased from 28.6 percent in 2013 to 23.4 percent in 2014 while the consumption rate of paper magazines also decreased from 11.1 percent to 5.3 percent. 

Although the consumption rate of mobile internet increased, the rate of fixed internet decreased from 64.4 percent in 2013 to 57.8 percent in 2014. The consumption rate of SNS also dropped from 55.4 percent to 49.9 percent.
