SEOUL, April 28 (Korea Bizwire) — Targets for biogas production have been set for municipal and business entities that generate a certain amount of organic waste.
The Ministry of Environment announced on Thursday that it will issue an advance notice of legislation for the lower statutes of the Biogas Act by June 9.
The statutes stipulate that, based on the maximum amount of biogas that can be produced from collected organic waste resources, municipal governments should aim to reach a production target of 50 percent by 2025, 60 percent by 2035, 70 percent by 2040 and 80 percent by 2045.
In addition, pig farms that raise more than 20,000 pigs, facilities that process more than 100 tons of livestock excrement per day, and workplaces that generate more than 1,000 tons of food waste per year are required to reach a 10 percent biogas production target starting in 2026.
Private producers who are mandated to produce biogas will have their output target revised upwards to 50 percent in 2035, 60 percent in 2040, 70 percent in 2045 and 80 percent in 2050.
Producers who fail to meet the output target will be fined.
