SEJONG, March 31 (Korea Bizwire)BMW Korea Co., the local unit of the German carmaker, will recall a combined 3,296 of the 3 series and 5 series sedans for problems with their airbags as part of the company’s worldwide recall plan, the South Korean transportation ministry said Thursday.

The models’ airbags, produced by Japan’s Takata Corp., were found to have a problem in the inflater unit, which can send metal fragments flying and injure vehicle occupants in case of a crash, said the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The problem has been detected in 3,296 vehicles, including 320i and 530i sedans produced between Jan. 4, 2002 and Jan. 31, 2006.

The Takata airbag issue has forced the German carmaker and other global car brands to recall millions of cars throughout the world for the last few years.

BMW decided last month to recall some 840,000 vehicles to replace their airbags in the United States.

A detailed schedule has not yet been fixed locally due to a shortage in the supply of the auto parts, according to the South Korean ministry.

The ministry also said Audi Volkswagen Korea, the local importer and distributor of the German automaker, is recalling 1,146 Passat 1.8 TSI sedans produced between Nov. 18, 2014 and June 24, 2015 for a defect in their fuel injectors and brake vacuum pumps.

Free repair services will be available from April 5 at the company’s service centers throughout the country, it added.

Forza Motors Korea Corp. will also call back 2,403 Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli sedans produced between March 15, 2013 and Dec. 16, 2015 for a glitch in the driver’s side floor mat anchor, according to the transportation ministry.’
