BTS Achieves Double Platinum Status in Japan

SEOUL, Jan. 16 (Korea Bizwire)K-pop boy group BTS sold more than 500,000 copies of its eighth single “MIC Drop/DNA/Crystal Snow” in Japan in December, becoming the only foreign artist last year to pull off such sales, the group’s agency Big Hit said Tuesday.

BTS was awarded double platinum status by breaking the half-million mark, according to its agency, citing data published Monday by the Recording Industry Association of Japan.

After the album was released in Japan in December, it topped the daily singles chart on Oricon for sixth straight days and shot to No. 1 on the weekly chart.

At the end of last year, the album ranked 13th on Oricon’s yearly singles chart, the highest ranking ever for any K-pop artist.

The Japanese association certifies albums by sales every month: gold at 100,000, platinum at 250,000, double platinum at 500,000, triple platinum at 750,000 and million for 1 million.
