SEOUL, March 6 (Korea Bizwire) —
The Jogye Order Social Welfare Foundation, South Korea’s largest Buddhist organization, announced on March 5 that it plans to expand its temple stay matchmaking program to include foreign participants, marking a new approach in addressing the country’s low birth rate.

The “Naneun Jeollo” (I Go to the Temple) program, previously limited to Korean nationals, will now welcome foreigners who demonstrate a genuine interest in settling in Korea, according to Venerable Myojang, the foundation’s director.

“We received suggestions about providing opportunities to those who wish to marry, have children, and live as members of Korean society,” Venerable Myojang said during a press conference in Seoul’s Jongno district. The foundation is also considering extending the program from its current one-night format to a two-night stay.

Last year’s six sessions drew considerable interest, with 3,400 applications for 160 available spots. While 33 couples initially formed during these events, foundation officials reported that only five couples continue dating. None of last year’s participants have married or had children yet.

The temple stay matchmaking initiative represents one of several social welfare programs run by the foundation, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Other initiatives include a program providing lunch to university students near temples to ease their financial burden, and Seon meditation programs focused on suicide prevention and healing.

The foundation also continues its long-running support for children with rare diseases, having assisted approximately 1,000 young patients over the past 24 years.
