SEOUL, March 31 (Korea Bizwire)A disused public bus garage will be transformed into a “compact city” where large urban forests, public houses and social overhead capital (SOC) are interwoven.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Housing and Communities Corp. on Monday unveiled a winning international design project to reform Jangji Public Bus Garage in Songpa District.

The winning project proposed a Multi-layer City in which various urban functions are arranged in three dimensions in the form of a podium on a total of 38,120 square meters of land.

Smart garage facilities and SOC for everyday life will be deployed from the first basement level to the third floor above ground, and 27,000 square meters of urban forest will be created at the top, which accounts for 70 percent of the site area.

Next to the urban forest will be a total of 758 public housing units for young adults and newlyweds.

In the green areas, phytoncide forests, grass squares, ecological puddles and a water square linked to Jangji Stream will be established. The forest will be reborn as a local hub park where residents can rest, meet people and hold local events.

The city plans to begin construction in the second half of 2021 after receiving approval and finalizing the design. The project is set to be completed by the year 2024.
