BUSAN, Oct. 28 (Korea Bizwire)A cryogenic logistics center using liquid natural gas (LNG) cold heat will be set up in the southern port city of Busan.

EMP Belstar, a U.S.-based cold chain logistics centers operator, on Wednesday signed a business agreement with the Busan metropolitan government and the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority and kick-started full-scale preparations for the establishment of the eco-friendly energy cryogenic logistics center.

LNG cold heat refers to the energy that is generated in the process of converting gas that is transported in a liquid form at a temperature of lower than minus 162 degrees Celsius into a gas form for use as a fuel.

EMP Belstar developed technology to use the energy generated in the process as a refrigerant.

The company plans to invest 244.7 billion won (US$288 million) to establish the Korea Cryogenic Busan Logistics Center in the ninth zone of the International Industrial Logistics Complex in Busan.

With one underground floor and five above ground floors, the logistics center will have a total floor area of 121,383 square meters and will contribute to creating about 300 jobs.

The city government said that since LNG cold heat is used as a refrigerant, it can lower electricity costs by up to 80 percent compared to existing logistics centers that rely solely on electricity.
