BUSAN, Jan. 7 (Korea Bizwire) – The city of Busan announced on Monday that it had installed seven underwater artificial reefs near Mokdo, Saha-gu to contribute to restoration efforts of the local marine ecosystem.

The artificial reefs are 13.5 meters wide and 9 meters tall, and are effective in gathering migratory species.

Since 1987, the City has invested over 20.9 billion won (US$18.6 million) to install 14,584 reefs across 3.219㏊ of water near Cheongsapo, Yongho-dong, Bukhyeongjae-Do and Namhyeongjae-Do islands, and other areas.

The city plans to continue installing the reefs this year by injecting an additional 1.5 billion won (US$1.34 million).

According to a study by the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency, the installation of an artificial reef typically raises fish catches by up to 2.6 times.

“Climate change, the deteriorating quality of fishing grounds, and overfishing are resulting in a shrinking population of marine resources,” said a source from the city of Busan.

“We will continue to do our best to take care of the ecosystem and foster the growth of marine species.”
