BUSAN, Oct. 27 (Korea Bizwire) — The Busan Port Authority (BPA) said Tuesday it had completed the development of an liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered hybrid straddle carrier that can contribute to improving the port’s atmospheric environment, including fine dust.
A straddle carrier is essential equipment needed to move cargo at port. However, it has been pointed out that they are a source of air pollution since they are usually powered by diesel fuel.
The newly-developed LNG hybrid model can satisfy the emissions standards for stevedoring equipment.
In addition, compared to existing models, it can reduce the emission of fine dust and nitrogen oxides by 99 percent. While having the same productivity as existing straddle carriers, it can save fuel costs by about 52 percent.
The port authority plans to recommend terminal operators to introduce the new equipment through demonstration and PR activities.
