BUSAN, March 15 (Korea Bizwire) – Still reeling from the Hanjin Shipping crisis, South Korea’s largest port is incorporating Internet of Things technology to transform into a high-tech logistics destination.

In accordance with a MOU signed on Tuesday, Lotte Data Communication, with its IoT technology, and KL-NET, a port logistics IT company, will be developing an IoT platform for the harbor.

The new technology will be tested on ten shipping container transport vehicles by September, after which it will be introduced to the entire port officially starting in 2018. The Busan Port Authority (BPA) and the Busan Center for Creative Economy and Innovation will provide additional support for other necessary steps in incorporating the system.

Once established, IoT sensors affixed to shipping containers will allow authorities to monitor real-time information such as location as well as internal temperature and humidity to better respond to any inconsistencies.

Shippers, port operators, shipping companies, and truck drivers will also be sharing data to improve the overall efficiency of cargo maintenance, officials said, adding that further integrating smaller vessels (i.e. tug boats) in the harbor with the system would allow for a more effective operation of the port.

The BPA expects the IoT platform to reduce distribution costs, while improving the overall quality of service for its customers.

“Our new venture will connect together all resources in the Port of Busan,” said BPA CEO Woo Ye-jong. “It will help cut costs, and improve security and service for our customers, which will ultimately boost the competitiveness of the port.”
