SEOUL, Nov. 8 (Korea Bizwire) — Cargo trucks are being modified illegally to be driven without urea water solution, a key material used in diesel vehicles to reduce emissions, given the current shortages brought on by a Chinese ban on exports of urea.
An online forum of cargo truck drivers is increasingly talking about ‘vasectomies’ for their cargo trucks, which is slang for illegally modifiying cargo trucks to avoid the use of urea water, known as diesel exhaust fluid.
The ‘vasectomy’ involves installing a separate part or electronic control software, both of which are illegal.
However, the skyrocketing price of urea water in recent months is forcing a number of cargo truck drivers to take illegal measures.
According to online discussions, illegal modifications cost between 1.5-2 million won (US$1,266-1,690). Truck drivers are reportedly lining up to make reservations.
