SEOUL, April 17 (Korea Bizwire) – The neologism “DeukTem” (득템) in Korean refers to the act of obtaining an item, where “Deuk” means “to get” and “Tem” means “item”. Originally coined in the context of acquiring valuable items in online games, the term has been adapted to describe situations where one acquires a particularly good deal or bargain.
With the steeply rising inflation in Korea, more people are turning to convenience stores for their shopping and dining needs, leading to heightened competition for ultra-low-priced products. To meet this demand, the convenience store chain CU has launched a series of food products under the “DeukTem” brand. On Monday, CU introduced its 22nd product in the ultra-low-price private brand “DeukTem” series: a frozen pizza priced at just 2,900 won ($2.2). The picture shows CU’s shelves stocked with the newly launched product.
