SEOUL, Jan. 9 (Korea Bizwire)Leading South Korean movie theater operator CGV drew a record number of some 4 million moviegoers at home and abroad with its advanced film screening technology ScreenX last year, the company said Wednesday.

ScreenX provides an immersive cinema experience with its screen that goes beyond the traditional scale to run the whole length of the room.

The 2018 figure marks three-fold growth from a year earlier, according to CGV. Box office revenue from 2018 reached US$40 million, compared to $11 million the previous year.

The solid growth was driven by the wild success of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” whose tickets for ScreenX drew more than 1 million moviegoers in South Korea and elsewhere in the world.

It is the first movie that more than 1 million moviegoers watched on ScreenX, CGV said.

The 2018 increase was also helped by a number of Hollywood films like “Black Panther,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” “The Meg” and “Aquaman,” which drew some 300,000 spectators each.

ScreenX newly launched in nine new countries last year, including France, Britain, Spain and Canada. Currently, CGV is operating 195 ScreenX rooms in 17 countries, with the number of screens set to surpass 200 next month, CGV said.

This year, CGV is planning to screen “Shazam!,” “Alita: Battle Angel” and a BTS concert tour film, “Love Yourself in Seoul,” on ScreenX.
