SEOUL, April 22 (Korea Bizwire)The local government is stepping up to recycle plastic bottles into clothes and bags.

The Cheonan city office in South Chungcheong Province announced Tuesday that it has signed a contract with the Ministry of Environment, the Korea Packaging Recycling Cooperative (KPRC), and a number of private companies to set up a recycling system for plastic bottles.

The contract aims to create a one-stop system of recycling plastic bottles into high value products, from discharging, collecting, and transporting plastic bottles to manufacturing a final product.

Using the plastic bottles discharged and collected, the city plans to manufacture shoes, bags, clothes, and new plastic bottles.

In accordance with the contract, the city will be in charge of discharging, collecting, and sorting plastic bottles, and the KPRC will be responsible for retrieving Sparkle-branded water bottles and managing overall performance.

Private companies will be responsible for producing flakes, recycled textiles, fabric, and other products for commercial use.

The city collected 98 tons of plastic bottles between February and April, enough to create 500,000 short-sleeve t-shirts.
