Children’s Character Education: Biggest Concern for Korean Working Moms

SEOUL, Korea, Oct 31 (Korea Bizwire) – A study said the biggest headache for working moms who have to juggle work and family is character education for their children. According to a survey conducted by job portal career.com on 266 working moms, the respondents found instilling social and moral lessons to their children hardest to do (22.8%). It was then followed by “worries about children’s health” (18.6%), “lack of conversation” (15.6%), and “children’s academic performance” (11.4%).

Other answers included “their own health and well-being” (10.0%), “negative perception toward working moms in the office” (8.4%), “home obligations interfering with work” (7.0%), and “inability to attend children’s school events” (5.6%).

To a question what kind of change you want to see to address the problems, 24.5 percent of respondents said “more childcare service at work,” followed by “institutional change including vacations and unpaid leaves” (19.6%), “change in people’s perception” (16.3%), “improvement in childcare service” (14.6%), and higher payments for childcare support” (11.5%).

As to a question why working moms still work despite disadvantages, the lion’s share (69.4%) said they do it for money. Others answered “for self-satisfaction” (12.7%) and “for professional career” (11.9%).
