SEOUL, Aug. 13 (Korea Bizwire) — An international “chimak” festival, sponsored jointly by the city governments of Daegu (Korea) and Ningbo (China), was held in the city of Ningbo in China’s Zhejiang Province for four days between August 8 and 11 with thousands of visitors filling the venue. Chimak is a compound word between (fried) chicken and beer. The chicken-and-beer combination was made popular among Asian viewers of Korean drama “My Love from the Star.”
The event was held in celebration of the first anniversary of the sister city agreement between Daegu and Ningbo. Daegu, known as the home of fried chicken, is holding a similar event for one month in August at Duryu Park within the city.
In addition to the festival, six Korean chicken franchisers met with prospective franchisee store owners to provide information on the business by setting up booth. Of these, the booth for “Chicken Party,” the brand for Sunjin VFC, was crowded with more than 200 visitors inquiring about business prospect.
Choi Rang-shik, head of Chicken Party chain business division, said, “Our unique frying technique and sauce recipe are what differentiates our chicken from any other Chinese-made fried chicken. We plan to launch our brand in China within the year’s end and go global within a few years.”
Ahn Kuk-joong, Daegu city government’s director in charge of economic affairs who lent support to the Ningbo festival, said, “I hope the special flavor of Korean fried chicken can be promoted widely in the world through festivals like the one in Ningbo.”
