SEOUL, Dec. 11 (Korea Bizwire) — Chinese e-commerce platforms operating in South Korea have seen mixed user trends following Coupang’s massive data breach, with some apps losing active users while others continued to grow, according to new industry data.
Mobile Index, a data unit of IGAWorks, said Wednesday that AliExpress and Shein experienced declines in daily active users (DAU) after the leak became public on Nov. 29, while Temu continued its recent upward trajectory.
As of Dec. 7, AliExpress recorded 1.59 million DAU, down by more than 100,000 from the 1.7 million-plus average recorded between Nov. 26 and 28, before Coupang confirmed that personal information from 33.7 million users had been compromised. AliExpress remains the most widely used Chinese e-commerce platform in the Korean market.
Shein also slipped, with DAU on Dec. 7 standing at 257,155 people, compared with more than 270,000 in late November.
Temu, however, continued to build momentum. The app exceeded 1.41 million DAU on Dec. 7, rising from the mid-1.3 million range in late November and adding roughly 500,000 daily users month-on-month.
An industry official said the data suggest that Coupang users did not immediately migrate to Chinese platforms following the breach. The analyst also noted that speculation about the nationality of the hacker—identified in some reports as Chinese—may have dampened consumer sentiment toward other China-based e-commerce firms.
