SEOUL, May 24 (Korea Bizwire) – Chinese tourists spend six times more than their Japanese counterparts when they visit the South Korean capital, a survey by the Seoul Metropolitan Government has revealed.
According to the Seoul Institute, Chinese tourists visit Seoul 1.9 times on average, but spend about 2.13 million won during a visit, while Japanese tourists visit Seoul 4.9 times on average, but spend only 330,000 won per visit.
The poll also revealed that Southeast Asian tourists visit Seoul 1.9 times on average, spending about 790,000 won, while tourists from North America, Europe, and Oceania were found to each spend 660,000 won, vising 3.1 times on average.
Shopping was found to account for 57.6 percent of the average total spent by each tourist. Tourists in their 30s spent the most on shopping (1.22 million won), followed by tourists in their 20s (1.18 million won), in their 40s (920,000 won), and in their 50s and older (650,000 won).
Female visitors spent more on shopping than males, with each female visitor spending about 1.14 million won on shopping alone compared to the average of 970,000 won spent on shopping by a male visitor.
The poll was conducted in December last year with the participation of 1,045 foreign tourists who were departing through Incheon and Gimpo airports after having visited Seoul.
