Choi Min-Soo References Sewol Tragedy in Turning Down Acting Award

Choi did not attend the award show, and Baek Jin-Hee, Choi’s co-actor from “Pride and Prejudice” gave the speech regarding the award on Choi’s behalf.

SEOUL, Jan. 4 (Korea Bizwire) – Korean actor Choi Min-Soo revealed why he refused to accept the Gold Acting Award for his appearance in the drama Pride and Prejudice at the MBC Drama Awards.

On December 30, Choi and actor An Nae-Sang were selected as the recipients of the Gold Acting Award at the 2014 MBC Drama Awards held live at the MBC Media Center in Sangam, Seoul.

Choi did not attend the award show, and Baek Jin-Hee, Choi’s co-actor from “Pride and Prejudice” gave the speech regarding the award on Choi’s behalf.

Reading from his prepared remarks, Baek mentioned that Choi is currently playing a public welfare district attorney in the drama, and that feels he has done nothing to deserve an award. Baek surprised everyone by saying that Choi actually refused to accept the award.

However, Choi revealed more while talking to the press. He said that he was indeed referring to the Sewol tragedy in the refusal speech delivered by Baek. He added that he believes his refusal is the “right course of action for our consciences and hopes drowned in the deep cold sea in an age where law and common sense is falling apart.”

Choi also revealed that Baek accidently omitted the part referring to the Sewol ferry tragedy in his speech, and said that Baek had made a tearful apology over the phone.
