SEOUL, Apr. 10 (Korea Bizwire) — The government is facing growing calls to introduce stricter GMO labeling laws.

Over 200,000 people have now backed a petition on the official Blue House website calling for stricter GMO labeling and a ban on the use of GMOs in schools.

With 202,010 people on board as of Monday afternoon, either the Chief Presidential Secretary or other government officials in charge of agricultural product labeling are expected to issue an official response.

“All products that contain GMOs should be given a clear GMO label, and the use of GMO products should be banned in school meals. The current rules from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety that prohibit the display of ‘non-GMO’ on packages and labels should also be reformed,” the petitioner explained.

Last year, then candidate President Moon Jae-in pledged to stop the use of GMO products in schools and require companies to specify GMOs used in their products in a more transparent manner.

The petition for stricter label laws became the 25th to elicit response from the government since the petitions website was first established.

A number of petitions are currently active on the official Blue House website, with one calling on the government to investigate into the cases of sexual harassment involving celebrities, among other social issues of note.
