Citizens Share Disaster Information Online as Typhoon Hits Peninsula

SEOUL, Aug. 11 (Korea BIzwire)Citizens shared real-time footage of weather and road conditions across the country through online platforms as Typhoon Khanun passed over the Korean peninsula.

Naver Corp. introduced a new ‘typhoon’ page on its weather tab, hosting an open chatroom where participants can instantly share various instances of damage.

By Thursday morning, around 1,400 photos, 700 videos, and 26,000 messages had been posted in the open chatroom.

The typhoon page offers users a one-stop access to weather alerts, radar and satellite footage, as well as a nationwide text messaging service for disasters.

Naver mentioned that the tab is accessible solely during an ongoing weather alert and will be closed once the situation concludes.

Kakao Corp. manages the ‘Real-time Nationwide Weather Condition’ open chatroom through KakaoTalk’s ‘Open Chat Light’ service.

As of Thursday morning, over 50,000 individuals had joined this open chatroom, exchanging weather conditions from various regions.

Kakao also established open chatrooms that distribute various region-specific alerts, including ones for Busan and Jeju.

Online secondhand marketplace Danggeun Market also unveiled a new feature under the neighborhood tab, which synchronizes with local text notifications about disasters.

This feature rapidly delivers disaster warnings and enables users to exchange photos and messages regarding current weather conditions via comments.

These online platforms have reportedly attracted enthusiastic users eager to stay informed about the neighborhood’s current weather situation and share their own insights.

Naver and Kakao’s map applications permit users to check existing road and regional conditions through real-time CCTV footage, displaying occurrences like flooded roads or fallen trees.
