SEOUL, Aug. 22 (Korea Bizwire) – CJ CGV, South Korea’s largest multiplex cinema chain, announced on August 21 that its subsidiary, CJ 4DPLEX, achieved record-breaking sales last month as more moviegoers are opting for premium theater experiences like ScreenX and 4DX.

CJ 4DPLEX, which operates special format theaters in 75 countries worldwide, reported global box office revenues of $49 million in July, marking its highest monthly earnings to date.

The surge in revenue is attributed to the successive releases of Hollywood blockbusters during the summer season, which have proven particularly attractive in premium format theaters.

“The exceptional performance is a result of the enthusiasm for special format screenings of major July releases such as ‘Despicable Me 4′, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, and ‘Twisters’,” a CJ CGV spokesperson explained.

The company anticipates that upcoming releases in the latter half of the year, including “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “Gladiator 2,” and “Wicked: Part One,” will further boost special format theater revenues.

Buoyed by the improving financial results, CJ 4DPLEX expanded its presence last month, adding 12 new ScreenX theaters in markets including the United States, Japan, and Taiwan.

The expansion’s success was immediately apparent in Taiwan, where four newly opened ScreenX theaters achieved an average weekend occupancy rate of 53% during the release of “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
