SEOUL, Sept. 10 (Korea Bizwire) — South Chungcheong Province and the Chungnam Fire Service Headquarters completed the development of a high-altitude fire extinguishing system using collective drones and carried out demonstrations on Thursday.
At the demonstration, held at the National Fire Service Academy in Cheonan, two scout drones and three firefighting drones were deployed to extinguish a fire at a high-rise building.
The scout drones tracked down the heat to locate the source of the fire and sent three-dimensional video data to the firefighting drones, which used it to effectively target the fire.
A large-sized drone with a take-off weight of 200 kilograms was also deployed to rescue injured personnel.
The demonstration proved that the drones are capable of discharging fire extinguishers both horizontally and vertically at an altitude of up to 500 meters.
Ladder trucks can only cover up to a height of 70 meters, making it difficult to fight fires and rescue victims at tall buildings that rise above 100 meters. Drones, however, are expected to overcome such limitations, officials said.
