SEOUL, March 7 (Korea Bizwire) — In a recent excavation at the woldae in Gwanghwamun, the main gate of Gyeongbok Palace in Seoul, a Japanese colonial-era tram railroad has been discovered.
The tram line was constructed in front of Gyeongbok Palace during the Japanese colonial rule (1910-45), causing damage to significant facilities such as Gwanghwamun Woldae and Samgunbu.
A woldae is a broad pole-like platform situated in front of various events, especially in a palace’s main hall, and was utilized for diverse cultural events, particularly during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).
Similarly, the Samgunbu was the government office responsible for military service during the early Joseon Dynasty, and both hold significant historical value.
On Monday, the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Cultural Heritage Administration announced their plans to open the woldae and surrounding excavation sites in Gwanghwamun to the public for three days, starting on March 16.
They will collect feedback on the conservation and maintenance of the remains from the citizens.
