SEOUL, Jan.10 (Korea Bizwire)Kia Motors presented its Soul EV autonomous vehicle at CES 2016 (Consumer Electronics Show), the largest electronics exhibition in the world, which is currently being held in Las Vegas. Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Ford and Toyota also presented partially autonomous vehicles or smart concept cars. However, the real competition is said to lie in sensors and radar.

Five radar devices and 12 sensors (USS) were installed in a transparent glass car for the DAS (Driver Assistance System) exhibited by Hyundai Mobis.

The radars and sensors detect movement, dividing it into long range and short range motions. The competition is related to how the radars, sensors and AVM cameras detect movement in detail with accuracy.

The level of proficiency of systems such as the Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Highway Autonomous Driving (HAD) and Traffic Jam Assist System (TJA) all depends on how elaborate the sensors and radars are.

Mobis officials explained that sensors are the basic component that connects parts with parts, parts with people, and cars with telecommunication.

Hypervisor companies such as Android Auto (Google) and Auto Chassis OS (Autosar) take care of the operating system (OS) which unites the components.

Mobis officials went on to explain that behind the competition in final motor products among manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and GM, fierce competition lies among the ‘Tier One’ companies which have to supply the parts to car brands.

Auto parts suppliers in competition with Hyundai Mobis are Bosch and Denso.

Bosch is known to supply GM with next generation car infotainment devices, as well as sensors for autonomous navigation. At CES, Bosch presented its car display while hiding all of the sensors. The driver’s seat of the Jaguar Land Rover looks as if is a VR (virtual reality) game.

Denso created a ‘smart city’ emphasizing that it is the company that makes the foundation of autonomous vehicles.
