SEOUL, May 16 (Korea Bizwire) – South Korean convenience store giant CU is continuing its efforts to ramp up employee safety with a newly introduced counter safety barrier that will help protect employees in case of an emergency, including violent crimes.

The newly opened Yeoksam-dong branch in Gangnam District is the very first CU store in the country to adopt the safety barricade, CU’s latest security feature deployed to bar violent customers from harming shopkeepers.

At the push of a button, the safety guard system will see a barricade block potential criminals from entering or getting too close to the counter while giving enough time for CU employees to escape through an emergency exit.

Other safety features include a siren system and a light projector that is six times brighter than then the headlamps on a car.

CU’s latest move to adopt increased security measures comes in the wake of a series of crimes targeting vulnerable convenience store workers who are often alone, some of whom work late into the night without any protection.

Previously, BGF Retail, the parent company of CU convenience stores, faced criticism over a lack of apology when a clerk at a CU convenience store in North Gyeongsang Province was stabbed to death after asking a customer to pay for a plastic bag last December, prompting protests in front of the company’s headquarters.
