Coronavirus Pandemic Boosts Popularity of E-book Readers

SEOUL, Sept. 10 (Korea Bizwire)Strict social distancing guidelines brought on by the coronavirus pandemic have prompted a growing number of South Koreans to read books to pass the time.

South Korean online commerce giant 11st reported that sales of e-book readers and tablets jumped by 117 percent between Aug. 30-Sept. 6.

Table lamp sales also jumped by 46 percent, while sales of book racks and bookshelves climbed by 44 percent and 40 percent, respectively.

Gmarket, another online shopping malls, reported a 60 percent jump in e-book reader sales compared to last month. Sales of bookstands, table lamps, and bookends increased by 35 percent, 28 percent and 14 percent, respectively.

Experts argue that the surge in sales is largely due to the expansion of digital library services at regional public libraries.
