Coronavirus Results in Higher Number of VR Travelers

SEOUL, March 3 (Korea Bizwire)LG Uplus Corp., a major South Korean telecom operator, reported a 204 percent increase in the average number of viewers each month who watched video content related to travel and healing on its U+VR app last year as the coronavirus spread throughout the country.

Viewer numbers for the movie and performance categories jumped by 144 percent, compared to 124 percent for the celebrities and K-pop idols categories.

In the first quarter of last year, when the coronavirus began to spread in South Korea, the average number of monthly viewers jumped by 193 percent compared to the previous quarter.

Restrictions on foreign travel due to the coronavirus prompted viewers to turn to virtual reality, the company explained.

Among videos related to travel and healing, videos about Dokdo and scuba diving series highlights in Cebu, the Philippines topped the charts as most viewed content.
