SEOUL, Dec.29 (Korea Bizwire)The government is resourcing big data to apprehend corruption dealing with the maintenance costs of apartments.

The Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the Gyeonggi province announced that they adopted the big data method to investigate maintenance costs of apartments and to promote a much needed transparency.

Authorities analyzed the costs of 47 items and various bidding data to calculate the ‘Unjustified Apartment Maintenance Cost Index’ and the ‘Irrational Bidding Index’ of apartments in the Gyeonggi province.

Apartments with higher indexes are suspect to corruption; they have higher maintenance costs when compared to other apartments with similar conditions.

The ministries and the Gyeonggi province are said to be running an audit on three of the apartments with the highest index score.

The reason big data was adopted in the investigation process was based on the fact that it is impossible for the government to investigate the maintenance cost of numerous apartments one by one.

The Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs is anticipating a 1.1 trillion won reduction effect if just 10 percent of the maintenance cost could be cut.
